Columbia and Boone County public schools are some of the strongest in the state, routinely producing some of the largest numbers of National Merit Scholars among public and private school districts in Missouri.  

  • The Univeristy of Missouri was founded in 1839 in Columbia, and represents the first college west of the Mississippi river.  Today it is the state's largest public research university and largest employer in Columbia.
  • Columbia College serves more than 30,000 students each year through its campus here in Columbia as well as online courses and at campuses in 13 states across the country.  Founded in 1851 as Christian Female College, in 1970, the school opened its doors to men and changed its name.
  • Stephens College is a women's college located in Columbia and just across the street from MU and just a few blocks from CCIS.  Founded in 1833, it offers education for women in liberal arts, performing arts and professional fields.
  • Moberly Area Community College now has a larger presence of enrolled students through its campus at the Parkade Center on the business loop than it does in Moberly, MO.
  • Central Methodist Univeristy is a private univeristy located in Fayette with a campus in the Cornerstone Building in south Columbia.
  • The Columbia Area Career Center is another local resource for continuing education, career training, and trade courses for adults.  
  • Bryan College is a small campus in south Columbia on LeMone Industrial Blvd offering healthcare and business programs.

Columbia & Boone County Communities

Ashland, MO is in southern Boone County and is one of the fastest growing areas along the Hwy 63 corridor.  As the popultion continues to grow, residents still enjoy the quaint, small town ambiance with thriving churches and new residential developements.  From the heart of Ashland to the regional airport is only 5 minutes, and only 15 minutes to downtown Columbia.
